Lab 10. Overview  Instructor checks pre-labs. in lab notebook  Discussion of ind. project papers. (3 copies)  Basic Eukarya and Cells Overview.  Student cell-model presentations then complete 1 st page of in-class exercise.  Examination of 4 wet-mount slides and 2 prepared slides.  The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks TBL.  Gather antibiotic plate data.  Complete 1 st page of in-class assignment.  Sketch plant cultures.  Discuss Independent project w/ instructor.

Cell Structure Comparison Bacteria

Eukaryotic Cell Processes MITOSIS (make more of same ploidy) MEIOSIS (one 2n cell becomes four 1n cells) 2n 1n 2n FERTILIZATION - two 1n cells fuse to become one 2n cell

Eukaryote Phylogeny Excavata Animalia Rhizaria Fungi Chrom- alveolata Plantae eukaryotic cells (nucleus, etc.) Amoebozoa most protozoans, brown algae, & water “molds”

Bacterial Cell (contains peptidoglycan) (mostly H 2 O) (lipid bilayer with embeded proteins) e (nucleic acid) (protein & nucleic acid) NO nucleus NO organelles

Plant Cell cell wall w/cellulose

Amoebozoan Cell NO cell wall NO chloroplasts

Fungal Cell (Yeast) mitochondrion with chitin (glycogen Granule) NO CHLOROPLASTS

Animal Cell nucleus vacuole cytoplasm plasma memb. mitochondrion Golgi apparatus ribosomes endoplasmic reticulum NO CHLOROPLASTS NO CELL WALL

Reminders for the Lab  READ the instructions (  ) in the manual  Ceramic sterilizers are HOT.  Be careful with the Bunsen burners and open flames. Do not set yourself on fire. The instructor must be in the room if a Bunsen burner is on.  Methylene blue WILL stain skin or clothes.  Put cover slips on at an angle to avoid trapping air bubbles.
