His Life Before Presidency He was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884, son of John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen Young Truman. He was an artillery officer in WWI until the war ended and he became a county commissioner in Missouri. He then became the senator of Missouri. Then became vice president for Franklin Roosevelt.

Life During Presidency After Roosevelt died at the beginning of his fourth term, Truman stepped in and took his place. He became president and immediately got to work, he kept all of Roosevelt’s cabinet members and staff. His first matter to deal with was the war in Japan. He warned the Japanese leaders that he was going to drop an atomic bomb on them if they didn’t surrender. They didn’t listen, and Truman was forced to make one of the toughest decisions any human being has ever had to make, to drop the bomb, or not. He decided to drop the bomb once, on Hiroshima, but the Japanese still didn’t listen, and he was forced to drop another bomb on Nagasaki.

His Life After the Presidency Truman then returned to his house in Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his memoirs and received $37,000. This was important to him because he was having financial troubles after leaving the office. He wouldn’t take any of the commercial benefits or be on a corporate payroll because he says it would diminish the integrity of the nation’s highest office. He then went to Europe where he got a degree in civic law from Oxford. When he got home he got to deliver a speech to the senate. Then, he fell in his bathroom at age 80 and seriously limited his physical capabilities. Finally, he died from pneumonia on December 26, 1972 at age 88.

WWII Whenever the United States got into the war, Truman was not president, Roosevelt was. Their reason for getting into this war was because the Japanese bombed pearl harbor on December 7, 1941. Then the war went on with the allies vs. axis. With the axis being Germany, Japan, and Italy originally, then growing with whatever countries they took over. The allies being the U.S., Britain, and Russia as the main three countries. Then later in the war Germany surrendered, but the Japanese didn’t, so Truman dropped the bombs.
9
Aftermath of Bombs The bombs that landed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki completely destroyed those two little Japanese towns and brutally killed the innocent civilians. Deaths like having their skin peeled off because of the radiation and things like growing extra limbs.

Truman’s Personal Life Truman was the oldest child of John and Martha Truman. Something many people don’t know about Truman is that his middle name is S, and just S. On June 28, 1919, Truman married his only love interest Bess Wallace. They had one child, a girl named Mary Margaret. Truman is the only president to be elected without a college degree.

Truman’s Assassination Attempt On November 1 st, 1950, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo attempted to assassinate Truman at Blair House. Torresalo was shot and killed in the attempt while Collazo was caught and sentenced to the death penalty. Truman later had his sentence changed to life in prison. Truman actually awoke from his nap and was watching the gunfight for a while until a passer – by told him to take cover.

Truman’s Impact on History Truman was the first person to ever use the atomic bomb so he completely expanded the knowledge of weapons technology around the world. He also completely ended the second world war which was a huge impact on history. He also was president when the United Nations was established which is dedicated to making sure no more world wars ever happen. Truman also fought in WWI, and was the first president without a college degree.

Process Paper The reason we chose this topic was because we were interested in the use of the atomic bomb. Also, we got to do a little background on WWII, which is a very interesting topic. Harry Truman actually did more to influence history than either of us could ever imagine. Another reason we chose this topic is because Dan thought had a cool title. Also, a person who can have someone try to kill them and then defend them so that they don’t get the death penalty, is someone interesting that we want to learn more about.
