6 QUESTION. Dixiecrats ran on a platform that opposed Civil Rights legislation and supported increased rights for southern states. Southern Democrats were angered by Truman’s nomination on behalf of the Democratic party. Thirteen southern states met in Birmingham, Alabama to elect their own Democratic Presidential nominee. What is a “Dixiecrat”?
