Roots of the Cold War n Intense rivalry between the USSR & U.S. -> struggle for international dominance n Cold War = competition for global power n - waged on political & economic fronts n - threat of all all out war n - economic & political differences

Deadlock Over Atomic Weapons n American fear a nuclear war ! n US develops more powerful bombs n Soviets test their first bomb in 1949 n “Nuclear Arms Race” n 1946 Congress passed Atomic Energy Act - Atomic Energy Commission = oversee research & promote peaceful uses n Supports the weapons program

Containment Around the World n Prospects for cooperation dimmed n Greece 1946,civil war :rebels ->Soviets n monarchy-> Gt. Britain n Britain can’t continue support n Truman Doctrine = US will support free people who resist attempted subjugation n Congress approves $400 million in aid to Greece & Turkey
