On the Banks Today’s Goal: To learn how human activities can cause erosion To learn that humans are also the solution to erosion To learn how to prevent excess erosion and sediment

On the Banks Erosion is a natural process whereby the earth’s surface is broken apart by weathering and the pieces are transported by gravity, wind, or water

On the Banks Excess erosion results in too much sediment in our streams, lakes, and rivers

On the Banks Sediment is one of our biggest sources of water pollution

On the Banks Excess sediment:  Makes it difficult for fish to breathe  Settles to the bottom of streams and smothers fish eggs  Clogs storm sewer pipes which can lead to flooding  Disrupts boating activities by making rivers and lakes more shallow

On the Banks Vegetation is one of the best, and least expensive ways to prevent erosion Stones and Walls can help too

On the Banks Weathering is the breaking down or breaking apart of earth materials, such as rock or soil, by wind, water, ice, etc.

On the Banks Which ones are true when soil is in the water and which ones are true when soil stays on the land: Soil in WaterSoil on Land Can clog sewer pipes and ditches, which can cause flooding Smothers fish eggs Bad for fishers and boaters Good for Farming Good for Farmers Less flooding and cleaner boating Good for all of us who eat the Farmers’ food Difficult for fish to breathe It makes it difficult for fish to breathe Good for Farmers Can clog sewer pipes & ditches, which causes floodingIt can smother fish eggsIt’s Good for Farming It’s good for all of us who eat the farmers’ foodIt’s bad for fishers and boaters Reduces the risk of flooding and makes boating cleaner

On the Banks Which of the following are causes of erosion and which are ways to prevent erosion: Causes of ErosionErosion Prevention  No Vegetation No Vegetation Good Vegetation Good Vegetation Good Vegetation  Fast-Moving Water Fast-Moving Water Slow-Moving Water Slow-Moving Water Slow-Moving Water Steep Hills  Steep Hills  Low water absorption by plants by plants Low water absorption by plants  Till Farming Till Farming Gentle Hills Gentle Hills Gentle Hills High water absorption High water absorption by plants by plants High water absorption by plants No-Till Farming No-Till Farming No-Till Farming  Lots of Surface Runoff Lots of Surface Runoff  Little Groundwater Infiltration Little Groundwater Infiltration Less Surface Runoff Less Surface Runoff Less Surface Runoff Groundwater Infiltration Groundwater Infiltration Groundwater Infiltration  No erosion controls on construction sites construction sites No erosion controls on construction sites Good erosion controls on Good erosion controls on construction sites construction sites Good erosion controls on construction sites
