1 9 Questions on Ecological footprint
EEn 9 Questions on Ecological footprint Humanity needs what nature provides, but how do we know how much we’re using and how much we have to use? Eric Angat Teacher

2 Ecological footprints measure humanities demand on nature.
How do we affect nature? Ecological footprints measure humanities demand on nature. Everything that we do has consequences…

3 Ecological footprint Sustainability

4 1. What is Ecological Footprint?
Ecological Footprint is the amount of land and water required to sustain our consumption patterns and absorb our wastes on an annual basis.

5 Sustainability utilizing natural resources without destroying the ecological balance of an area.

6 How can you lessen your Ecological Footprint and achieve a sustainable development?
Reuse means use materials repeatedly. Move away from disposables! Recycle means using used materials to create new products. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future

7 In 2050, we will need almost 2 more Earths to survive.
# of Earth In 2050, we will need almost 2 more Earths to survive. We need another ½ earth in order to survive normally. In 2007, our population has exceeded what our planet can provide. Or survive, if we attain sustainability. Is it possible? Years

8 1. Carbon footprint 2.Grazing footprint 3. Cropland footprint
2. What are the six types of ecological footprint? 1. Carbon footprint 2.Grazing footprint 3. Cropland footprint 4. Forest footprint 5. Fishing footprint 6. Built-up footprint

9 2.25 football fields =1 hectares 1 football field is 1.1 acres
Every American needs 7.19 global hectares (gha) to sustains their needs and wants. Greatest waste produced! That means every American needs 3.20 football fields to sustain their needs and wants. 2.25 football fields =1 hectares 1 football field is 1.1 acres 2.25 football field =1 hectares 1 football field is 1.1 acres

10 3. What do each of the six types of ecological footprint represent?
4. How can you lessen your ecological footprint?

11 Ecological Footprint

12 Representations of the different types of Ecological Footprint
1. Cropland footprint – farms, tobacco, wheat 2. Grazing footprint – livestock like cattle 3. Forest footprint- wood for building, paper 4. Fishing footprint- fish for food 5. Built-on land footprint- houses, buildings 6. Carbon footprint- use of fossil fuel, trees needed to absorb CO2

13 By reusing, reducing and recycling.
How to lessen our ecological footprint! Carbon footprint – lessen use of fossil fuel, plant trees. Recycle! Cropland footprint- do not waste food. Grazing footprint- do not waste food. Fishing footprint- do not waste food. Built on land footprint- population control, recycle, reduce, reuse. Forest footprint- do not waste papers and other materials from the forest. By reusing, reducing and recycling.

14 5. Why do we need sustainability?

5. Why do we need sustainability? If we destroy our environment we will no longer have a habitat and food source. We need to think about our future food source.

16 6. Why should we be afraid of global warming?

17 6. Why should we be afraid of global warming?
Global warming leads to the melting of polar ice caps and the alteration of weather patterns or climate change.

18 Sewer water contains a lot of bacteria that uses a lot of oxygen
Sewer water contains a lot of bacteria that uses a lot of oxygen. This makes lakes polluted and anoxic ( NO oxygen). sewer Eutrophication

19 7. When a sewer pipe breaks near a stream which would most likely occur?
increase in salinity decrease in dissolved nitrogen decrease in dissolved oxygen increase in pesticides

20 affect our environment?
8. How does our culture of consumption affect our environment?

21 8. How does our culture of consumption
affect our environment? Because when we consume too much we also produce too much trash that poisons our water, land and air.

22 9. Why is recycling so important to attain
sustainability?

23 Recycling lessens consumption which means less stress to our
9. Why is recycling so important to attain sustainability? Recycling lessens consumption which means less stress to our environment. Recycling lessens waste and pollution in the environment. Recycling lessens the need for more sanitary landfills.
