THE PROPINQUITY EFFECT: DOES LOCATION MATTER? N.B.D. Consulting Services
2
PROPINQUITY The propinquity effect is the tendency for people to form friendships or romantic relationships with those whom they encounter often, forming a bond between two or more people. In other words, relationships tend to form between those who have a high propinquity. Today the internet brings the world closer together through Facebook, Skype and sometimes television. What impact, if any, does the internet have on propinquity? More importantly how does proximity impact the development of buyer personas?

PERSONAS We represent less than one percent of all U.S. households; our median household income is more than three times higher than the US median. We’re in our peak earning years, highly educated, married couples with and without kids. We are fortunate to be able to afford anything, so we buy the best, and always travel first-class in the US and abroad. Top Rung We’re well-educated, successful suburbanites with good jobs who live in growing, affluent areas. Most of us are two ‐ income, married ‐ couple families with or without kids. Our houses feature the latest home improvement and remodeling amenities and the best of interior design. We travel extensively for business and pleasure in the US and overseas. Suburban Splendor We’re busy, affluent young families with young children living an upscale lifestyle in new suburban developments. To keep up, most of us have two incomes and two vehicles. We hold positions in management, professions, or sales. Boomburbs
