Cognitive Interviewing
Firstly, pair up and sit back to back.
Decide on who will be the talker/thinker and who will be the
listener/writer.
Chose one of the following three problems shown on the next
two slides (the first three are primary school maths, the fourth a
more open problem)
a) the talker/thinker must describe the question in their own words to
the listener/writer, who must write it down
b) the talker/thinker must then attempt to solve the problem,
describing and analysing each process s/he goes through. The
listener/writer must again write it down.
c) Turn to face each other and consider the process and information
you have just collected.

2. Mr Daley bought some pigs, goats and sheep. Altogether
he bought 100 animals and spent £600. Mr Daley paid £21
for each pig, £8 for each goat and £3 for each sheep. There
were an even number of pigs.
How many of each animal did Mr Daley buy?
Carrie has glued some cubes together to make a large solid
cube with nine small cubes showing on a face. She paints the
large cube red. How many of the original cubes have 1) 3 faces
painted red 2) 2 faces painted red 3) 1 face painted red 4) no
faces painted red?
Momma’s Pizza Shed has the toppings ham, salami, chicken,
mushroom, tomato, bacon and pineapple. Jessied decides that
she will have 2 toppings on her pizza. How many choices does
she have?
At the Pizza Place at the Centre of the Universe, there are 100
toppings available. How many choices would Jessie have at this place?

3. A travel agent wants to open a new travel agency. She currently has
5 shops but wishes to expand the business. The problem is where to
site the new shop.
The new shop should focus on the mass-market package holiday
business- the annual two-week holiday rather than business travel.
Which town in England would be a good site and within that town,
which site- shopping centre, high street, suburb, airport?
