Enlightenment Thinkers Ideas about Government Hobbes Social contract: agreement that members of a society should be ruled by an authoritarian(strict) ruler to keep order Locke All human beings have natural rights to life, liberty, and property Voltaire Promoted tolerance, freedom of religion, freedom of speech Rousseau Social contract: power of the gov’t came from people agreeing to it Montesquieu Liberty is safeguarded by “separation of powers “that keeps one group from controlling the whole gov’t

Work in your group to create a short statement about your Enlightenment Thinker’s ideas about gov’t. Make sure to include the following: – Name – Country – Ideas – Influence on democracy
