Osslt preparation session 3
Thank you for attending today’s session. We look forward to working with you once again.
2
WELCOME TO SESSION 3 What we’ll be working on:
examining two different kinds of reading reviewing the tips for reading and answering questions practising reading and writing skills
3
READING In Section IV and V of the Literacy Preparation Workbook, you will be reading two different kinds of selections. You will then be required to answer multiple choice questions and to write some paragraph answers. Let’s begin on page on page 39…
4
LET’S REVIEW SOME TIPS BEFORE YOU BEGIN…
Prepare in advance by reading ALL the Multiple Choice questions (p. 40) Have a highlighter ready to mark important information as you read the text Don’t forget!
5
It is important to know that for this Section of the test, you will be looking at visual material such as graphs, charts, diagrams or graphics. EXAMINE CAREFULLY
6
CHECKING YOUR WORK After you have read the text and highlighted it, re-read the multiple choice questions and answer them carefully Once you have decided on your answer, go back to the text and, where possible, highlight or put a check mark where you got your answer
7
Now let’s try reading the text on pages 41 and 42…
“Trump Investments” And answering the questions that follow
8
IN THIS SECTION YOU ARE REQUIRED TO WRITE PARAGRAPHS
So…let’s review some of the tips for writing short answer responses.
9
WRITING A SHORT PARAGRAPH
ALWAYS, whenever possible, try to repeat part of the question in your opening sentence. Turn the question into a statement. Question 7: What evidence can you find in this selection that shows that Donald Trump has a great deal of persistence and determination? Becomes: Throughout the selection, there is evidence which shows that Donald Trump has a great deal of persistence and determination.
10
Question 8: Use information in this selection and your own ideas to explain what Trump means when he says, “When people see the beautiful marble in Trump Tower, they usually have no idea what I went through personally to achieve end results.” Becomes: What Trump means in the quote above is that he has worked hard to get to where he is now. YOU SHOULD NOT START TO GIVE YOUR REASONS, EXAMPLES, OR PROOFS IN YOUR OPENING SENTENCE.
11
THE WRITE STUFF Use the Rough Notes section at the bottom of the page to organize your ideas Try to fill up the lines provided but do not go over After your opening statement, try to include three (3) reasons, examples, or ideas to support your answer Re-read your answers carefully. Remember that your target audience is an adult marking your response Check for possible spelling, punctuation, or other grammatical errors Take pride in your answer!

When you are asked to SUMMARIZE your reading, then you must decide what the entire reading/article was about. For example, if you read a story about Wayne Gretzky, you would have to decide what the overall point was about the story and turn this into your opening statement. Ie. The main idea of the story was that Wayne Gretzky has not always had an easy life. THEN you would fill your paragraph with reasons to support your opening sentence.
