Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Almost an eJournal: Using the Library Catalog for Local Hosting and Management of Electronic Periodicals Special Libraries Association Annual Conference 2007 Contributed Papers Corey Seeman Kresge Business Administration Library University of Michigan

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver The epiphany! At yesterday’s Keynote, Al Gore said (paraphrased) The librarians’ role is to find and characterize data/information Furthermore, the librarians should translate it into the a way to make it accessible by the public This is MY PAPER (to a simple degree)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Kresge Library Overview Independent Library at University of Michigan Reports to the Ross School of Business –Top ten in three major rankings –#1 in 2006 Wall Street Journal - MBA program Ross School adopted an Action-Based Learning program Students require diverse and specialized resources

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Kresge Library Overview Our users need to work in multiple environments (Kresge Library & University Libraries) We have access to more resources that we document in our catalog** Users primarily come to our resources from an A-Z List. No real unified search. Our users are in a hurry! We only have two years with our users.

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver What are some of the hindrances to discovery? –Too many Silos –Different Scopes that are users do not fully grasp –A Sudoku mindset for treatment of library resources –Simplicity (or lack there of) Previous Presentation available: –http://mblog.lib.umich.edu/~cseemanhttp://mblog.lib.umich.edu/~cseeman –http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/50478http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/50478

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Scope Data (Full Text) MetaData (catalog entry) Searching Definitely not to scale!

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver ebrary Search Title Search in ebrary (1 hit)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver ebrary Search Keyword* Search in catalog (2 hits)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver ebrary Search Keyword Search in ebrary (232 hits)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver What are we playing with at Kresge? What can we do??? Silos – Lets try to use our existing tools & systems, rather than invent new ones Scope – Lets try to increase the data in our systems to increase opportunities for patrons. Sudoku – Forget the answer key Simplicity – Make it easy for the patrons and sustainable for the staff.

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver What are we playing with at Kresge? Overarching considerations We want to be entrepreneurial. We need to focus on solutions that get the resources into the hands of patrons easily. Use the tools that we have at our disposal. We need to understand the difference between a search when someone knows what they want vs. one where they do not. Lets not split hairs, when no one cares!

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Locally Hosted and Specialized Resources Action-Based Learning –Students working in teams to solve big problems or create markets for companies and organizations (inc. nonprofits) –To support programs, we need resources not designed for the library market –Resources are typically not available to share –We have a history of “local hosting” with these resources - but no clear understanding of the use

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Licensing Considerations Which populations can access the resource? For Kresge, this would include: –Ross School Only – A separate authentication allows us to limit to the 3600 total people at the Ross School vs. the 50,000 across the entire Ann Arbor campus. –Ann Arbor Campus only of the University of Michigan –All University of Michigan (Ann Arbor along with regional campuses at Dearborn and Flint)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS New Monthly Journal: Medical Industry Intelligence - Now four quarterly publications Published by Millennium Research (Toronto) Allows us to download PDFs and host them for the Ross Community Journal is not indexed anywhere Old thinking – Bib & Checkin record Problem – would people use it?

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Previous Solution – National Real Estate Index Single Catalog Record for Whole Publication

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Previous Solution – National Real Estate Index Issues listed on one page As new issues are added, the HTML is updated

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Previous Solution – National Real Estate Index Issues listed on one page As new issues are added, the HTML is updated Terms do not show up on site search

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS One solution Create a single record in the library catalog for each issue Include table of contents so it is easier to find Use templates in the system to make this easy to create & minimize what needs to be entered (very important for sustainability) Do not add issue specific subject headings (rely on the keyword searching)

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS Instead… We created a catalog record for each issue Using the catalog to host the e- journal

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS Template Driven Changes are modest when new records are created Takes little more than 10 minutes

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS We have a launch page that includes an RSS Feed display for new issues and a search box just for those issues.

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver New Display – Medical Industry Intelligence We have a launch page that includes an RSS Feed display for new issues and a search box just for those issues.

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver Issue level cataloging records in ILS Search over the Table of Contents yielded two hits.

Almost an eJournal – SLA 2007 Denver What are we playing with at Kresge? Next steps Hosting of other e-journals in our catalog (Dividend & ISS Corporate Social Issues Reporter) Hosting of marketing reports (where permissable) DSpace records from “Deep Blue” into Catalog – Following OSU.
