Content/Language Objective 1 Participants will explain orally and in writing the intent of LE.1 and how it communicates DPS Core Values using complete sentences with the whole group by: a)discussing with a partner using sentence frames b)highlighting key words and creating a room chart of key words c)preparing with a small group and delivering an explanation to the whole group of how LE.1 communicates the assigned DPS Core Value with a group

What is the Intent of LE.1? Discuss at your table, what you see as the intent of LE.1. Why is LE.1 a part of the Framework for Effective Teaching?

Intent of LE.1 Emphasizes equal access to all content for all students. Emphasizes the importance of teaching all students respect for cultures and others’ experiences that may be different then their own. Emphasizes the importance of creating an environment that celebrates all students’ cultures and background experiences. Emphasizes the importance of students connecting what they learn at school to their individual cultures and background experiences.

DPS Core Values Count off so each participant is designated a number from 1 to 5 Form groups of five that include like numbers. Each group is assigned the DPS Core Value corresponding to their group number. Groups discuss how LE.1 communicates the DPS Core Value they are assigned. Each group needs to assign a spokesperson to share their explanation with the whole group.

Communicates DPS Core Values #1 – LE.1 Communicates expectations for teachers that ALL students can learn when they have equal access to content. #2 – LE.1 Supports teachers in implementing high quality instruction that is connected to students’ cultures and experiences. #3 – LE.1 Supports accountability for all teachers in providing equitable access to content for ALL students. #4 – LE.1 Promotes collaboration of teachers in identifying students’ cultural norms. #5 - LE.1 Supports connections between the classroom and students’ home experiences.

What Can Be of Evidence for LE.1? Participants read the Handbook LE.1 Closer Look packet Discuss with others how the examples provide evidence for LE.1. Discuss how the examples can support equitable access to content for all students.

What Can Evidence Look Like for LE.1? Refer to Handout 2, Classroom Scenarios. Working in groups of 3, develop an example for how evidence for LE.1 could look and sound.

Applying LE.1 Select a lesson or topic you will be teaching in an upcoming lesson. Plan for how you will ensure equal access to the lesson content for all students. Handout 3, Reflection and Planning Questions for LE.1, may be used to guide your planning.
