The purpose-built sector An estimated 450,000 bed spaces in the sector 404,000 covered by three Codes of Standards: – Two run by ANUK/Unipol – One run by UUK Increasing financial pressure on institutions resulting in rapidly rising rents Traditionally largely owned and run by institutions Now a more complex picture with private providers’ market share growing Recent fall in student numbers means that there is now an oversupply in some areas However, as yet, there has been little competition on price

Accommodation Costs Survey Research conducted every 2 – 3 years by NUS and Unipol Aimed at institutions and private providers of purpose-built student accommodation (or halls of residence) This year’s survey covered around 85 per cent of bed spaces There have been huge changes in recent years to: – The level of rent charged – The types of room on offer – Who is providing these rooms
