Soundboard Operation Checklists Before Mass Preparation ActionComments Power On the console White button on the top of the rack to the right. Check that house speakers are on in all open sections. Check w/ Patrice or Mass Coordinator if any sections should be off (typically for non-Sunday services) They can be turned on via cabinet in room behind the choir Mute Commons, Hearing Assist, and Lectern during sound check Check choir mics for positioning. Should be horizontal, not pointing at the monitors, or in too close proximity to the monitors. This will reduce the risk of feedback during the service. Wait for choir to stand up, get choir microphone numbers. When they’re singing, validate they haven’t moved the mics into potential feedback position Conduct Sound Check: Raise levels for mics being used to 0db Mute unused mics. Lower these faders to -40db. Balance soloists for even levels across singers The best overall level is when mic channel 17 is at the yellow dot, and adjust everything from there - this puts the monitors at about the right level. Confirm key console settings. Validate monitor #1 @ 12:00, monitor #2 @ 1:00 Right section aux sends are post-fader except Piano Ensure even aux sends levels into the monitor mixes, so the choir and Patrice hear consistent sound. Review the Baseline Console Settings document for a complete listing of what each knob’s initial position was before performance specific adjustments. Confirm mute group settings. Choir Mute Group should contain only mics being sung into Band Mute Group should contain only mics with an instrument These can easily be adjusted via the SAFE/PREVIEW function. Please review the user manual for questions. Walk through each sanctuary section to make sure sound is OK. Check wireless mic(s) battery level on mic. These will be hanging up in the back room in a white shoulder holster. Validate wireless microphone numbers. Fr. Bill is typically Wireless 1. Deacon Bob is #2. Un-mute Commons, Hearing Assist, & Lectern after sound check. Timing is about 2-5 mins before mass start time. Soundboard Operation Checklists During Mass Considerations ActionComments Validate that the Commons and Hearing Assist is un-muted. Levels should be between 0db and -10 db. When no one is at the lectern, mute. This isn’t critical, but rather prevents un-wanted noise from being picked up. Un-mute the choir/band when Patrice readies her hands at the piano When the choir or band is not performing, mute. Beyond preventing un-wanted noise from being picked up, this also reduces the risk of feedback getting into the system. Adjust individual channel levels to keep balance to the overall mix being heard through the mains This is particularly important under these circumstances: When singers change mics during the performance When the guitar & bass are playing. They tend to pick softer in warm- ups than during the mass. IF FEEDBACK STARTS, the quickest solution is to: 1.Turn down Monitor #2 about 20 db. 2.Turn down Monitor #1 about 20 db. After each step, evaluate change in feedback levels in the mains. Feedback happens easier via the small monitors, as these are closer to the mics and their position is adjusted more frequently Feedback happens when the monitors are loud enough to feed their output back into the mics to create a loop.
