4. Roper v Simmons - rights were upheld Simmons was sentenced to death in 1993. when he was only 17. they claimed executing minors was cruel and unusual punishment.

5. Harmelin V Michigan - rights were not upheld Following his conviction under Michigan law for possession of cocaine. Harmelin was sentenced to life in prison with out parole. He challenged the sentence claiming it was cruel and unusual punishment.
