What is the E.U. ? an international organization of European states established by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht treaty) in 1992 its current legal base is the Treaty of Nice which entered into force on February 1, 2003 the E.U. comprises a large number of overlapping legal and institutional structures, arranged by treaties

the eighth largest in the world EU Area is on 3 continents (Europe, South America and Africa) EU citizens: approximately 453 million (March 2004) third largest in the world after India and China

FACTS flag: a circle of twelve golden stars on blue background
the twelve stars symbolize the harmony and perfection and have nothing to do with the count of members the anthem is based on “Ode to Joy” from Ludwig van Beethoven's ninth symphony, which is based on Friedrich Schiller's “Ode an die Freude” due to the large number of languages in the EU, the anthem is purely instrumental and has no lyrics the motto of the Union is: United in diversity (in varietate concordia) the currency of the Union is the euro (€)

FACTS EUROPE DAY - May 9th
on May 9th 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, this is considered to be the beginning of the creation of the European Union
