3
www.lightsource.ca Background Operators need to monitor and control a number of processes, systems, devices, and equipments. EPICS PVs (Process Variable) and EDM (Extended Display Manager) screens based on the PVs are created for this purpose. The operation of the synchrotron is a complicated process. The numbers of PVs and EDM screens involved can be overwhelming
4
www.lightsource.ca Goals A quick and easy way to give the operator a snapshot of the machine status at one glance A quick and easy way to navigate through different EDM screens A quick and easy way to pin point each individual PV when necessary A quick and easy way to locate the problematic component when a machine trip happens A centralized location to put all involved PVs and screens together

www.lightsource.ca Injection/Machine Status Screen Group Status: combine all component status together A group status PV is created to indicate the collective status of a group of components in a sub-system. The group status PV monitors all individual PVs in this group and calculates the combined status. Different algorithms are used for different types of PVs. Eg. finds out the highest alarm level in the group and pass it to the group PV.
10
www.lightsource.ca Injection/Machine Status Screen Example: pass highest alarm to the group PV
11
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screens Overview of CLS Machine Protection Systems (MPS) Tasks: monitors vacuum status using ion pumps, cold cathode gauges, multi gauges, etc. monitors device cooling status using flow switches, flow transmitters, thermo couples, RTDs, etc. shuts down vacuum valves/photon shutters, disables Gun/ RF, for VACUUM PROTECTION/DEVICE PROTECTION when necessary interface with other systems such as the personnel safety system, modulator controls, and other machine protection systems Components of a typical MPS: a PLC system a hardware interlock system/a redundant PLC system
12
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screens Machine Protection Screens: display device status provide operator controls helps diagnose problem
13
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screens Example: LINAC Machine Protection Screen
14
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screens Example: Hard X-ray MicroAnalysis (HXMA) Frontend and Beamline Machine Protection Screen
15
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screens Similarities to the Injection Status Screen: Devices are organized into groups Group status is represented by the color of its indicator For some indicators, sub-screens can be brought up and displayed in an embedded window. Related displays are provided when necessary to access more detailed information
16
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screen Bypass: Who got bypassed? bypass indicator regular indicator
17
www.lightsource.ca Machine Protection Screen Latch indicator: Who tripped the machine? regular indicator latch indicator the component tripped the machine will be latched latch indicators appear around the component indicator and its group indicator, and so on latch indicators keeps showing until the latch is cleared even if the component status is GOOD No new latch indicators will appear as long as the current latch is not cleared

www.lightsource.ca Integrated Master Displays The injection status screen and LINAC machine protection screen cover two important aspects of LINAC operation. However, they are not the only screens involved. There are also other screens such as the power supply status and vacuum status screens. A master display contains tabbed windows is therefore developed to integrate those screens into one single display. Example: LINAC Master Display

22
www.lightsource.ca Benefits Simple, self-explanatory, and user friendly Better organization of PVs and control screens A handy tool to help identify problems Shortened the average time taken to return the storage ring to service after a trip
23
www.lightsource.ca Future More indicators are to be added into the grid status indicator matrix as new devices are installed into the system More screens are to be integrated into the master displays as the system evolves Considering extend the indicator color key definition so that more status can be identified.
