E.G from textExplanationBig Picture/ why relevant today Tom Robison: Scout: "Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but … Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.“ Atticus: “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Tom was persecuted, regardless of the fact he was innocent and “tried to help her (Mayella).” Like Boo Radley, Tom Robinson isn't just an individual. He's also a litmus test for Maycomb's racism—and, unfortunately for him, it fails. Our social responsibility is to treat others the way we would like to be treated. Nobody should be traeted unfairly because they are a minority. Reference to the wider issue of racism and prejudice in society today. All people should have equal opportunities, justices and rights. Tom Robinson was an example of all those who are a victim of a crime of prejudice. From Hitler and the Nazis to the Southern American slave owners, prejudice of one race against another has resulted in atrocities. To counteract the disease of racial prejudice, modern-day societies have drafted and enacted legislation to ensure that people “treat” each other with respect and dignity allowing one another their inalienable right to their pursuit of life and liberty. While man’s actions can be legislated, their hearts and fears cannot. Thus, society continues to suffer from the disease. Dolphus Raymond Dolphus lived with the black people because he "preferred the company of Negroes" (192). He pretends to be a drunk: "I try to give'em a reason...It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason.” "When I come to town, […] if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond's in the clutches of whiskey—that's why he won't change his ways.” Another victim of their prejudice. He also lived with the blacks because of the town's peoples' attitude towards him. Since he carried a brown bag with a bottle inside of it and everyone figured that he was an alcoholic. Believing this was the only way Maycomb could justify his decision to live with the negroes. Dolphus Raymond is a character, who emphasises the obvious prejudice in Maycomb and demonstrates for Jem and Scout that loving people is far more important than loving the mindless traditions of hate. Dolphus highlights the fact that often when we judge people because of their appearance/ actions without really getting to know them, we are often making uninformed and incorrect judgements. The judgment from the people of Maycomb towards Dolphus is a reflection of their own insecurities and need to ‘put people in boxes’. Discrimination based on irrelevant physical characteristics reinforces stereotypes and undermines equal-opportunity principles based on merit and performance.

9. Atticus has important lessons to teach us about prejudice. Atticus: “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Scout asks Atticus if he is a “nigger-lover,” he replies, "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody....it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you." Atticus is an example of someone who holds no prejudices. People should not be judged before their character is known He teaches us that all people should be treated equally and given the same opportunities in life.. Everyone in life is different so we should not pretend to be better than anyone else, as it is impossible to know what people have been through, their morals, beliefs, etc, and therefore impossible to judge without this knowledge. Even in NZ society today, people carry prejudices based on a range of factors, such as what people look like, how they behave, their education and wealth. Atticus as a respectable character in the novel, teaches us not to ‘judge a book by its cover’ and that everyone has a right to be treated equal.
