What is a microprocessor? A microprocessor is an integrated circuit built on a tiny piece of silicon. It contains thousands, or even millions, of transistors, which are interconnected via superfine traces of aluminum. The transistors work together to store and manipulate data so that the microprocessor can perform a wide variety of useful functions. The particular functions a microprocessor performs are dictated by software.

Major Players Intel AMD Cyrix Minor Players Motorola IDT NEC Zilog
5
Advanced Micro Devices(AMD) Advanced Micro Devices are the world's second biggest CPU manufacturer. AMD began making X86 CPUs after signing cross-license agreements with Intel in 1976 and 1982.

Various Models by AMD The K series - K2, K3, K5, K6 Thunderbird Duran Athlon Hammer Palamino
7
CYRIX The 6x86 is what brought Cyrix into the market as a major competitor against Intel. It is one of the best chips to get for integer performance in real world applications. Furthermore, it achieves this at a lower clock speed than a comparable Pentium chip.

IDT Processors The WinChip C6 was IDT's first product in x86 market. Their whole focus is on low cost and an easy upgrade path. The processors are ideal for the desktop and the notebook markets
