Event Nationalist Reaction (noting any differences between Republicans and Home Rulers) Government - Conservative Local Government Act, 1898 Terms - Introduced county councils which would be elected. This served to move power away from the landed classes and towards the middle-class. Government - Conservative Wyndham’s Act, 1903 Organised the buying out of landlords by the state and allowing tenants to purchase the land through state loans with low interest rate to be paid back over a long period of time. Government - Liberal Councils Bill, 1907 Proposed a representative Irish Council which would deal with some aspects of internal affairs. Government - Liberal General Elections in 1910 Wiped out the Liberal majority which it had held since 1906. It was now reliant on support from IPP. (After the second Election the Liberals had 272 seats, the Conservatives 272 and the IPP 84). Government - Liberal Home Rule Bill, 1912 Ireland was to have: 1. An Irish Parliament with a nominated upper house and an elected House of Commons. This executive would be answerable to Parliament. 2. The powers of the Irish Parliament were to be more limited than in previous Bills - British had more control over finances. 3. Ireland was to be represented in Westminster by 42 MPs. 4. Ulster was to be included in the Bill.
