Romeo and Juliet Writing your coursework essay
2
Lesson objectives: WALT - Use point evidence explanation (PEE) to analyse a character WILF - A detailed analysis of some of Shakespeare’s language
3
Starter: Using Point, Evidence, and Explanation (PEE) When you are writing about a text or discussing a text it is very important that you use quotes to back up what you are saying. Using PEE is a way of writing about a text making sure that you include textual evidence.
4
Analysing a text: What do you think the following quote said by Lady Capulet shows? ‘Nurse, where’s my daughter? Call her forth to me.’ She doesn’t know where Juliet is? She can’t be bothered to shout herself? She knows Juliet will listen to the nurse? Something else If you think she can’t be bothered to shout Juliet herself, find me another quote to support that idea. If you think it shows that Juliet will listen to the nurse, find me another quote to prove it. If you think something else… what?

Linking ideas together using PEE
6
Using the grid to help you PEE! Pick a phrase from the point column and make your point The author shows that Lady Capulet does not have a very good relationship with Juliet. Pick a phrase from the evidence column along with your quote We can see this when he writes ‘Nurse, where’s my daughter? Call her forth to me.’ Use a final phrase from the explanation column and in your own words explain what this means. Here we can observe Lady Capulet is reliant on the nurse to call her daughter, this is probably because Juliet would not listen to her. It also shows that Lady Capulet is very bossy.

Putting it all together: The author shows that Lady Capulet does not have a very good relationship with Juliet. We can see this when he writes ‘Nurse, where’s my daughter? Call her forth to me.’ Here we can observe Lady Capulet is reliant on the nurse to call her daughter, this is probably because Juliet would not listen to her. It also shows that Lady Capulet is very bossy.
8
Identify the Point Evidence and Explanation in this section Another occasion where we see that the nurse is closer to Juliet than Lady Capulet is when she says, ‘Nurse, give leave awhile, we must talk in secret. – Nurse, come back again.’ This quotation highlights the fact that Lady Capulet is scared to talk to her daughter alone and needs the nurse to be there even though it is a private conversation. Point Evidence Explanation

Use the grid to explain the following quotes: ‘She’s not fourteen’ ‘Tell me daughter Juliet, how stands your disposition to be married?’ Be careful – choose your expressions carefully- not all of them listed in the grid will go with what you need to say. You can tweak them if needed.
10
Using PEE to write your coursework essay. After you have written your introduction, write the first section of your essay where you analyse act 1 scene 3. You probably only need about 3 or 4 quotes BUT you must use PEE to analyse them fully. Comment on Juliet’s relationship with her mother and compare it to the nurse. How does her mother treat her at this point?
11
Homework: Write down 3 quotes from act 1 scene 3 Now use the grid to PEE on them.
