The Real-World God With Real-World Results
The Birth of Samuel The Real-World God With Real-World Results
8
Hannah was childless. Birth of Samuel A disaster!
Good reason for bitterness! 1:2 Elkanah had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not. 1:6 So Peninnah would taunt Hannah and make fun of her because the Lord had kept her from having children. 1:7 Hannah would be reduced to tears and would not even eat!
9
With a clueless husband.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. 1:7 “Why are you crying, Hannah?” Elkanah would ask. “Why aren’t you eating? Why be downhearted just because you have no children? You have me—isn’t that better than having ten sons?”
10
With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Pours out her heart. Promises to “give back”. 1:10 Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord. 1:11 And she made this vow: “O Lord of Heaven's Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the Lord, his hair will never be cut.”
11
With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care. He is trustworthy! 1:11 And she made this vow: “O Lord of Heaven's Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you...” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
12
With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care. Finds immediate peace. 1:11 …Eli said, “go in peace! May the God of Israel grant the request you have asked of him.” “Oh, thank you, sir!” she exclaimed. Then she went back and began to eat again, and she was no longer sad. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. “One thing you can’t find… is a satisfied mind” “Peace of mind” is highly UNDER-RATED. > “Get up & GO” > Things make sense. > GREAT HOPE

With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care. Finds immediate peace. Samuel is the result. 1:20 …in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I asked the Lord for him.” WHY RUN FROM GOD? Why GOD-Aversive?
14
With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care.
Birth of Samuel Hannah was childless. With a clueless husband. She turns to Yahweh. Dedicates to God’s care. Finds immediate peace. Samuel is the result. Samuel lives with Eli. (Husband remains clueless) 1:22 She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.“ 2:11 …the boy ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest “Whatever you think is best,” Elkanah agreed. 1 Samuel 1:23

Eli’s House Thieves & Scoundrels (“In the name of God…”)
Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord or for their duties as priests… So the sin of these young men was very serious in the Lord’s sight, for they treated the Lord’s offerings with contempt. 1 Samuel 2:12-13,17
16
Eli’s House Thieves & Scoundrels. Amoral. Pagan practices.
“Temple prostitutes” 2:22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. HANKY-PANKY So WERE Pagan GODS REAL?

Afraid of losing the relationship… VERY COMMON
19
Eli’s House Thieves & Scoundrels. Amoral. Nags his sons.
Afraid to discipline. Because he gives them too much honor. (and gives God too little honor) 2:27-29 One day a man of God came to Eli and gave him this message from the Lord: “…Why do you give your sons more honor than you give me?”
20

21
Eli’s House Thieves & Scoundrels. Amoral. Nags his sons.
Without discipline. Because he gives them too much honor. Thoroughly corrupted! He lost his whole family! 1 Samuel 2:31 (NLT) The time is coming when I will put an end to your family, so it will no longer serve as my priests. All the members of your family will die before their time. None will reach old age. 2:34 And to prove that what I have said will come true, I will cause your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, to die on the same day!

“What is all the noise about?” Eli asked. The messenger rushed over to Eli, who was ninety-eight years old and blind. He said to Eli, “I have just come from the battlefield—I was there this very day.” “What happened, my son?” Eli demanded. 1 Samuel 4:14-18 (NLT) “Israel has been defeated by the Philistines,” the messenger replied. “The people have been slaughtered, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were also killed. And the Ark of God has been captured.” When the messenger mentioned what had happened to the Ark of God, Eli fell backward from his seat beside the gate.
