2 Three Kinds Of Occupations Routine Production Service (Things) Construction Workers, Groundskeepers, Lab Technicians, Assembly Line Workers In-Person Service (People) Waiters, Secretaries, Retail Sales, Real Estate Agents, Security Guards Symbolic-Analytic (Data) Research Scientists, Accountants, Journalists, Lawyers, Real Estate Developers Simply stated, students are not adequately trained in high school for any of these kinds of jobs.

4 Vocational Education Smith-Hughes Act 1917 Vocational education “provides equal opportunity for all to prepare for their lifework.” Employers rarely use information schools generate-grades and test scores-to pick employees. Why not? Hard-To-Assess Information Hard-To-Assess Information: How do interviews/grades tell me what I need to know about student skills? Relevant Information: Is the info we get from schools relevant to our specific work demands? Trusted Information: How can I trust teachers who, really, are trying to help the student, not my business?
