Course of MT- 362 Material Handling Lecture # 4

Bulk Material Handling Bulk material - General definition could be that Material ordered, stored, issued, and sold by weight (such as bar stock or minerals), volume (such as oil), or footage (such as lumber (UK: timber))

Bulk Material Handling - It consists of loading, moving, transporting, transferring and unloading of bulk material from one place to another place

Bulk Material Handling Bulk Material Handling Equipment - Conveyor belts - Screw conveyors - Stackers (to pile bulk material such as limestone, ores) - Reclaimers (to recover bulk material such as ores and cereals) - Bucket elevators - Truck dumpers

Bulk Material Handling Belt conveyers (or conveyer belts) - A conveyor belt is the carrying medium of a belt conveyor system - belt conveyor system consists of two or more pulleys (sometimes referred to as drums), And with a loop of carrying medium (i.e., the conveyor belt) that rotates about them belt Pulley/ drum

Bulk Material Handling Belt conveyers - One or both of the pulleys are powered, moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. - The powered pulley is called the drive pulley while the unpowered pulley is called the idler pulley Idler (unpowered) pulley Powered pulley Motor assembly

Bulk Material Handling Belt conveyers - There are two main industrial classes of belt conveyors Those in general material handling such as those moving boxes along inside a factory and Bulk material handling such as those used to transport large volumes of resources and agricultural materials, such as grain, salt, coal, ore, sand etc.

Bulk Material Handling Belt conveyers applications/ examples - Airports (for baggage transfer) - Industry (material transfer) - Shops (payment counters) - Mines (mineral transfer) - Offices (e.g., postal services) - General production units (assembly/ inspection of parts)

Bulk Material Handling Importance of conveyer belts - These are durable and reliable components used in automated distribution and warehousing - Can also be computer controlled - A good labor saving system that allows large volumes to move rapidly through a process

Bulk Material Handling Conveyer belt material - The belt consists of one or more layers of material - Many belts in general material handling have two layers - Generally rubber covers on top and bottom with cotton, polyester or fabric layers in between - Other materials PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride), PU (PolyUrethane), Polyethylene

Bulk Material Handling Belt conveyer system of anBelt conveyer system: baggage inspection unittransfer

Bulk Material Handling Parameters for design of conveyer belts - Type of material being transferred - Load being handled - Belt speed - Belt width - Absorbed power (i.e the amount of power required for the drive pulley - Drive pulley shaft (e.g., consider the resistance of the belt)

Bulk Material Handling Bucket elevators and bucket conveyers - It is generally used for vertical mechanical transfer - A bucket elevator is a mechanism for transporting flow able bulk materials (most often grain or fertilizer) vertically - Application area Cement Rock Fertilizers Minerals (coal) Ores

Bulk Material Handling Bucket elevators system - Consists of buckets of desired shape and size - A belt or chain is used for the movement of buckets - Contains drive pulley and motor (as in conveyer belts) - Used for heavy duty load transfer - Full capacity load transfer can be achieved

Bulk Material Handling buckets Material exit Chain/ belt cover Material intake

Bulk Material Handling Belt bucket elevator - buckets are attached to a belt through pin joints - Belt material PVC (commonly for feed and grain industries) Rubber (for heavy duty applications) - Major benefits Low costs Easy maintenance

Bulk Material Handling Chain bucket elevator - Consists of Chain Sprocket Bucket holder Buckets Motor Gear systems - Benefits Long life Full capacity Durable Heavy duty

Bucket support Chain Pulley / sprocket Bucket
