This presentation will refer to other EMC CLARiiON hardware and software such as CLARiiON IP4700, Access Logix, SnapView, MirrorView, and Navisphere, which have their own presentations to further describe their business and technical benefits. Centralized management YES NO YES The combined effects of the exploding rate of information growth and the increasing value of information as a corporate asset require a best practices approach to the management and protection of information. We see the almost universal need to protect and share information while providing continuous service to customers. How have businesses kept applications running while ensuring effective information management and protection? In the data center, EMC is recognized for providing world-class information protection, management, and sharing tools that meet today’s business challenges. As we can see by our list of best practices, the data center has already implemented remote disaster recovery and high-speed recovery from disk, eliminated application unavailability due to backup windows, and has central management for greater control and efficiency. But what about the distributed computing centers. These environments do not benefit from the comprehensive best practices tools found in the data center. These tools were either not available for this environment or the smaller computing center could not justify the investment of data center size tools. A business challenge we face is how to remove the risks associated with the distributed computing computing environment. These distributed environments are proliferating and support applications and processes critical to the company’s core business. There is an urgent need to establish best practices in these environments to manage risk and sustain the business. In other words, a key business challenge is how to provide data center best practices to all computing environments.

The CLARiiON FC4700 now has twice the connectivity than its predecessor with four Fibre Channel ports. Expect even more throughput with double the cache. Each of the two storage processors have redundant Fibre Channel back ends to the disks. The CLARiiON FC4700 isn’t just more brawn, it has more brains too. The four Intel 733MHz Pentium III processors now run storage-based software to offload information from your applications servers. These new software products include MirrorView and SnapView. MirrorView provides remote disaster recovery by mirroring your production data to a remote CLARiiON FC4700. In the event of a site disaster, you can restart your application at the remote site. The second new product, SnapView, produces a logical point-in-time view of your production information. The SnapView snapshot allows you to use production data in parallel, compressing the processing time and delivering results faster. With the capability to scale up to 7.3TB of physical capacity, more power and capacity can be focused as needed. The CLARiiON FC5300 was one of the first CLARiiON products to join the EMC Enterprise Storage family of products. The CLARiiON FC4500 represents EMC’s focused development effort to deliver the first multi-host-attached CLARiiON storage unit. Note to Presenter: As of October 2000, the CLARiiON FC5700 is no longer being sold. All of the maximum capacity numbers assume 73GB drives. Using the FC-SW protocol, the CLARiiON FC4500 offers simultaneous multi-host Fibre Channel attachment for IBM AIX, SUN, HP-UX, Windows NT, or Windows 2000 computing platforms. So, as you evaluate your growing and changing storage needs, CLARiiON extends EMC Enterprise Storage capabilities to address the distributed and low-end requirements. The CLARiiON FC4700 is the first CLARiiON array to offer dual processors on each storage processor, dual Fibre Channel ports per storage processor, and dual FC-AL loops per storage processor. 7 CLARiiON FC4700 System Hardware THE CLARiiON ARCHITECTURE IS BASED ON DUAL STORAGE PROCESSORS
Each CLARiiON FC4700 storage processor has the following: Two Intel 733MHz Pentium III processors Runs more software, faster Two front-end Fibre Channel ports with optical GBICs More connectivity to more hosts—switched or arbitrated loop Redundant backend FC-AL loops Greater redundancy and greater throughput 1GB of RAMBUS memory Improved system response time A major advancement in the CLARiiON FC4700 is its storage processors. As you can see, the FC4700 storage processor is a high-performance component using dual Intel Pentium III processors, which means that more data can be processed faster, and that there is power to run the FC4700’s array-based software, SnapView and MirrorView. Other high-performance features include more connectivity and throughput through two Fibre Channel paths per storage processor, giving a maximum bandwidth of 400MB/sec for the CLARiiON FC4700. This is matched on the back end, or disk drive side, of the CLARiiON FC4700 as each storage processor has redundant Fibre Channel loops to the dual-ported Fibre Channel disk drives. To keep pace with the CLARiiON FC4700’s high speed processors, Rambus technology is incorporated to deliver 10 times the the internal memory performance of conventional DRAMs.

As depicted in this slide, the CLARiiON FC4700 can be deployed in three topologies: The simplest method of attaching servers to the CLARiiON FC4700 is direct attached. As shown on this slide, two independent servers can share an array. Of course the CLARiiON FC4700 is most valuable in a storage area network (SAN). By configuring your SAN with redundant switches for high availability, the CLARiiON FC4700 can deliver the performance you need, up to 14 hosts. And for higher capacity requirements, up to four CLARiiON FC4700s can be configured in a SAN. The CLARiiON FC4700 is qualified with all major cluster configurations including Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS), First Watch, and VERITAS Cluster Server. .

Navisphere provides a centralized tool to monitor, configure, and analyze performance. The Navisphere suite includes: Navisphere Manager—Allows GUI management and configuration of a single or multiple arrays and is also the center for management and configuration of array-based access and protection software including Access Logix, SnapView, and MirrorView applications. Analyzer—A performance analysis tool for CLARiiON hardware components. Event Monitor—Provides configurable alerts and alarms for faults in your environment. Integrator—Enables Navisphere integration with leading system’s framework management software such as HP OpenView. Agent—Provides the management communication path to the array. CLI—Provides text-based commands that can be used in user scripts, and also allows remote configuration if the server is down. Navisphere can be launched from EMC ControlCenter. In the event that you already have a Symmetrix and ControlCenter, Navisphere will allow you to manage all your information from one central location. 11 CLARiiON FC4700 NON-DISRUPTIVE UPGRADES
A new level of information availability for continued operation Both the CLARiiON FC4700 and all host-attached servers remain fully operational during system level or maintenance upgrade procedures Application software FC4700 core code Totally transparent to all array-attached hosts What performance characteristic is most important today? Many EMC customers tell us that it is continuous operation. Almost all high availability storage systems offer protection against system and hardware failures, but what about enhancements, system upgrades, and bug fixes? With most systems, these are the source of downtime when the system must be taken out of service. Non-Disruptive Upgrade (NDU) functionality has been designed into the CLARiiON FC NDU is a sequence of operations that allows you to add or change array software. This includes adding SnapView or MirrorView, upgrading their value-added functionality, or performing upgrades to the FC4700’s core code. Non-Disruptive Upgrade capabilities provide the security and protection of a truly seamless environment while system maintenance and downtime become a phenomenon of the past.

12 Access Logix VOLUME ACCESS CONTROL
Servers EMC Access Logix is a software product for CLARiiON storage arrays Access Logix ensures only authorized servers have access to specific volumes (LUNs) Storage-based product uses no host cycles Transparent to server, operating system, and applications Centralized, simplified management via EMC Navisphere Access Logix protects data from unauthorized access Servers can access only authorized volumes Access control is maintained once on the CLARiiON array rather than on every attached server Volumes can be shared by server cluster pairs Switches Access Logix ensures that servers receive appropriate volume access. Fibre Channel allows multiple servers to share a single storage port. In fact, this Fibre Channel feature permits storage consolidation. Access Logix’s volume access control enforces strict access rules on these shared storage ports. Notice that Access Logix protects volume access at the storage level. This means that storage administrators control access from a single point, the CLARiiON, rather than having to control access at every server. Additionally, storage-based Access Logix applies consistent access control transparent to the application, server platform type, and operating system. In other words, the server only sees storage to which it has access. Typically, each server would have access only to its own disk volumes. Clustered servers are also supported by Access Logix. A server cluster group (two or more clustered servers) can all have access to the same volume. The cluster software would ensure that, at any point in time, the appropriate server would control the disk volume. Finally, Access Logix is controlled from the same Navisphere console for simplified, consolidated information management. CLARiiON

Storage-based software, such as SnapView, has several advantages over host-based products. Since SnapView executes on the storage system, no host processing cycles are spent managing information. Storage-based software preserves your host CPU cycles for your business information processing and offloads information management to the storage system, in this case the CLARiiON FC4700. Additionally, storage-based SnapView provides the advantage of being a singular, complete solution that provides consistent functionality to all CLARiiON FC4700- connected server platforms. EMC SnapView allows companies to make more effective use of their most valuable resource, information, by enabling parallel information access. Instead of traditional sequential information access that force applications to queue for information access, SnapView allows multiple business processes to have concurrent, parallel access to information. SnapView creates logical point-in-time views of production information. Using only a fraction of the original filesystem, SnapView creates an additional view called a snapshot. Multiple snapshots can be created to suit the needs of multiple business processes. Servers see the snapshot as an additional mountable disk volume (or LUN). Servers mounting a snapshot have full read/write capabilities on that data. A SnapView snapshot is not a copy of your information, it is a logical view of the original information based on the time the snapshot was created. A snapshot can be created in seconds and can be retired when no longer needed.

14 Using SnapView for Parallel Operations

Activities which could be run in parallel with production include: Backup of volumes Decision support systems and their associated queries Simple management reports Data warehouse loads or extractions from data warehouses to data marts Application testing against a logical view of production data Batch routines required for completion before the next online day File maintenance and other “housekeeping” tasks within IT Note to Presenter: Discuss with customer where parallel access to information would be a critical advantage to their organization.

15 Example: Using SnapView for Backups

This process is for completing regular backups to tape storage while keeping production servers online. Step 1—Quiesce the application if required. Alternatively, the user can ensure that no more updates are inbound to the disk before it takes a point-in-time copy of the logical volume. Step 2—Use the SnapView user interface, or more likely the script containing SnapView API, to create a snapshot of the filesystem. Since SnapView creates a logical view of the filesystem, establishing a snapshot will only take a few seconds. This snapshot will become the backup image of the filesystem. Step 3—Bring the production application back online. Remember that it was only dormant for the quiesce and several seconds to create the snapshot. Step 4—Your snapshot is now mountable by the backup host. The actual backup will occur while production continues on the production server. The point-in-time instance of the snapshot is maintained by SnapView so the backup image is protected from production writes. The backup server reads the snapshot as the backup image and writes this point-in-time to tape. Step 5—The backup is complete. Retire the snapshot containing the backup image. Look at the advantages of using a SnapView snapshot. First, the application server is offline only for the quiesce and the few seconds it takes SnapView to create a snapshot. Backups now occur in parallel with production and have all day, if necessary, to complete. The little disk space required by the snapshot is released as soon as the backup is finished.

EMC MirrorView is a software product for the CLARiiON FC4700 MirrorView maintains synchronous remote mirroring between two CLARiiON FC4700 arrays Storage-based product uses no host cycles Transparent to server, operating system, and applications Centralized, simplified management via EMC Navisphere MirrorView protects production information from unavailability and loss Protection from environmental, mechanical, or technical threats Continuous, bi-directional information integrity Failover production environment to remote site Enables concurrent information access at remote site Synchronous, bi-directional remote mirroring Local CLARiiON FC4700 Remote Production A Mirror B Mirror B MirrorView is a storage-based application that resides on the CLARiiON FC4700. It provides an online, host-independent, mirrored data storage and protection solution that duplicates production site data (primary) to a secondary site (secondary) in a campus environment. The mirroring is synchronous, which means that every time a host writes to the primary array, the secondary array mirrors the write before an acknowledgement is returned to the host. MirrorView ensures that there is an exact byte-for-byte copy at both the local CLARiiON and the remote CLARiiON. And, MirrorView is storage-based software so no host CPU cycles are used in any way. This allows MirrorView to operate in the background, transparent to any hosts or applications, and is able to provide the same information protection services to all server platforms and operating systems that connect to the CLARiiON FC4700. Finally, MirrorView is managed from within Navisphere management software. That means that the same user-friendly Windows-like interface is common among all the CLARiiON software products, which minimizes learning curves and reduces training costs.

There is a primary and secondary CLARiiON FC4700 array that are connected directly to each other via a dark fibre cable using Fibre Channel protocol. There is one connection from the CLARiiON storage processor A to storage processor A on the secondary array, and from storage processor B to storage processor B on the secondary array, allowing for complete path failover. This particular configuration is limited to 500 meters, but with the addition of four Finisar extenders, MirrorView can be deployed for solutions as far as 10 kilometers. MirrorView is bi-directional. This means that production information from one CLARiiON can be protected on the other while the second CLARiiON is being protected by the first. In the image, we see that Site A and Site B are being protected bi-directionally.

Once the mirror is running on the secondary array, it is mountable by SnapView to create point- in-time copies for decision support, backups, or application testing. In this scenario, MirrorView is being used to provide a remote site for failover protection. However, the secondary site’s array does not need to be dedicated to the mirroring process. It can function as the main array for another group of hot hosts. It can also be the main backup location for both arrays. With SnapView installed on the secondary array, you can mirror from the primary and take a snapshot of the mirrored data to use for online backups, data mart refreshes, decision support tools, and report generation. This offloads the maintenance functions from the primary array, while also offering a perfect failover solution. MirrorView and SnapView for the CLARiiON FC4700 are tightly integrated. Because they are both managed from within Navisphere, they offer administrators a fast and efficient way to manage all mirror and snapshot activity on any array that resides on the SAN, no matter where they are physically located—in the same building or across town. Basic design—The CLARiiON FC4700 system is designed to provide % availability with no identifiable single points of failure. The system consists of two storage processor boards, dual mirrored write caches, four 100MB/sec Fibre Channel front-end connections, and two redundant FC-AL loops for disk I/O. The CLARiiON FC4700 storage processors are based on proven EMC CLARiiON modular building architecture Disk Processor Enclosure (DPE) technology. Power and cooling—Each CLARiiON FC4700 DPE has dual, hot-swappable, load-sharing power supplies. Only one supply is required to run the entire system should one fail. Redundant, hot swappable cooling is also standard. Storage processor complex—The CLARiiON FC4700 uses a dual storage processor complex for system I/O and disk I/O. Mirrored write cache is configured on each processor complex providing protection should one or both of the processors fail. The cache memory uses temporary battery power in case the main power completely fails. Each of the two storage processor complexes has three Fibre Channel controllers. Two are used for disk I/O and the other for the CLARiiON Messaging Interface (CMI) is used for communications between the two processor complexes. The CMI’s primary job is to pass data to be mirrored in the write caches between storage processors. The front-end ports utilize full Fibre Channel HBAs for CLARiiON- to-server I/O. DPE Disk Group—The base CLARiiON FC4700 includes a single group of 10 disks. Each 10- drive shelf can be configured as desired (RAID-level protection). A small portion of nine drives is used as a“vault” to hold the contents of the mirrored cache in the event of a total power and or cooling failure. The tenth drive is used as a global hot spare. Disk Array Enclosures (DAEs)—Additional 10-disk shelves may be added to increase the capacity of the CLARiiONFC4700. These additional DAEs are standard CLARiiON modular architecture DAE units and can be redeployed in a CLARiiON disk array if desired. Up to 100 disks
