Access Prior Knowledge Lesson 4: What are mixtures and solutions? Opening Activity Open Science textbook to page 358. Open Science workbook to page 112A. Open Science journal and answer the following questions: 1- What happens to particles as they are heated up? 2- Compare the particles in a solid and a gas? Open Science folder to review vocabulary words and outline for the chapter. Review Content Cards and Q-Cards in bin, sharing with partners quizzing each other quietly. Log in to clickers using student ID number. Be ready to review home learning when timer goes off. Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 113A.
2
Do you agree with the statement? Different materials do not form compounds in mixtures. YES NO
3
Do you agree with the statement? Metals can be mixtures of different elements. YES NO
4
Do you agree with the statement? Water is called the universal solute because it dissolves in many substances. YES NO
5
Do you agree with the statement? A solution is concentrated when it is not even close to being saturated. YES NO

Mixtures In simple mixtures, materials are placed together but can be separated easily because they have different properties and don’t form a bond. Many metals are alloys which are mixtures of elements such as steel (iron and carbon), brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper and tin) A salad is a mixture.
7
Separating Mixtures You can use materials’ properties to separate simple mixtures like using a magnet to separate iron filings from sand. You can separate sand from water by using a filter. BRAIN POP: Separating Mixtures

Solutions A solution is a special mixture where substances are spread out evenly and will not settle. Fruit drinks are solutions. A solute is the material that spreads out or dissolves, and a solvent is the material in which the solute dissolves. Sugar in lemonade; sugar is solute water with lemon juice is solvent. Another property is solubility which can be increased by stirring. Solubility is how much solute can be dissolved without changing the temperature. Diluted solution has little solute compared to solvent. Concentrated solution has large amount of solute compared to solvent. Saturated solution contains all the solute that can be dissolved without changing temperature. Diluted solution has little solute compared to solvent. TextQuest Answer in your Science Journal 1. How do you know something is a simple mixture? 2. What is the substance that dissolves in a solution? 3. What is the difference between a mixture and a solution? 4. Give some examples of mixtures and solutions. Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 113A.
