When do we use the past simple?
We use the Past Simple to talk about an action or situation that happened in the past. We often say when it happened: . Time expressions such as yesterday, ago, in 2007, in April, last month, etc. usually come at the beginning or at the end of a sentence. . Today, this morning, this afternoon, this evening, etc. can be past time markers if they mean before now.

How do we form the Past Simple? Regular & Irregular verbs
We form the Past Simple of regular verbs by adding –ed to the verb: work → worked Many verbs have an Irregular Past Simple form: take → took In the past tense, the verb form is the same for all persons: I walked to school yesterday. She walked to school yesterday.

Regular Verbs: Infinitive Past Simple To most regular verbs We add -ed
visit I visited my parents last weekend. watch They watched a film last night. start He started writing books. Verbs ending with –e: We add -d live She lived in Jeddah. like I liked the cake. Verbs ending with a consonant and - y We drop the –y and add -ied study I studied English. try She tried very hard. But enjoy I enjoyed the party.

Irregular Verbs Many verbs have an irregular past simple form
For more details, see page 116 in your book Infinitive Past Simple do I did my homework two hours ago. go She went shopping last week. come Sara came with me. write I wrote a letter to a friend. understand We understood the lesson.

Negative For negative statements in the past, we use did not and the infinitive (e.g. do, take, understand): I didn’t understand. (Not didn’t understood) Examples: . I did not stay at a hotel . We didn’t watch TV last night. . He did not arrive on time. . They didn’t come to the party. . My sons didn’t do their homework.

Practice: Change the following sentences to the negative:

Yes/No Questions and Short Answers:
We form yes/no questions with did and the infinitive. Examples: . Did you watch the film? ~ Yes, I did. OR No, I didn’t. . Did she buy some clothes? ~ Yes, she did. OR No, she didn’t.
