Sampling the Psalms: “Majestic Trust” Psalm 8 noun: majesty 1. impressive stateliness, dignity, or beauty. 2. royal power.

Psalm 8 1 O L ORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. You Lord, are impressive, full of dignity, beauty and power Your majesty is evident

We could expect this to be self-centered All about God… And his puny servants The psalmist goes the most unexpected of places

2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. God is so majestic and so self- assured that he trust his glory and praise to infants and children

Matthew 10:42 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

Matthew 11:25-26 25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

Matthew 18:1-6 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3 And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Matthew 19:13-15 13 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

God is invested in us from day one We are important to God even when we are not productive

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? In your power and majesty you created the universe and… You are invested in us, you care for us, you love us

You cared for us in our infancy and childhood You care for us as we age You Lord, never give up on us You Lord, do not get tired of loving us And not only that…

5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. God made is his majestic image A little lower than the angels With a desire to reunited with our majestic maker

But that is not the end of the story This all powerful God, who could demand us to love him instead… Cares for us in our infancy, childhood, and as we grow He made us in his majestic image and…

6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. He gave us power and authority We are not machines We have freedom and choice

This majestic God is no tyrant He loves, cares, makes us beautiful and trust us with his creation How could we possibly respond to this knowledge?

9 O L ORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! What else is there to say? Wow!

You are… Indescribable, uncontainable, amazing, all powerful, untamable you are amazing, God!

Putting it all together God is wonderfully majestic: you can think about it all you want and you will never get it But do try It is an exercise in humility

Putting it all together Our all powerfully majestic Lord is supreme Yet he gives us freedom and choice God gives us the choice to make great choices or even to make a mess of our lives

Putting it all together If the creator of the universe can trust you and me with his creation Maybe we aught to loosen our grip on many of the things we think need our control The world will not fall apart because you and I were not at the helm

Take in the fact that God loves you and has always loved you That God trusts you That you are no mistake That we are to worship the one who teaches us to loosen our grip of the things we think we control
