How we obtain our Resources
2
Harvesting involves collecting material that is above ground or close to the surface. Peat and wood are harvested materials.
3
Peat is made from decayed plant matter. It is burned for energy and forms in bogs and wetlands. Peat is not as widely used as it used to be.
4
Mining involves digging deep into the ground. Resources that we mine include rocks, minerals and coal.
5
Shaft is dug parallel to deposit Explosives are used to loosen the deposit Dangers: Mine collapse Explosion of natural gas stores Lung disease from mine air pollutants More expensive, but less environmental damage compared to surface mining
7
Drilling involves putting a well thousands of feet into the ground to reach natural gas or oil.
