Solar Energy By: Philip, Thomas, and Isabel

2 General Information Solar Energy is radiated energy, both light and heat, from the sun. Solar Energy can be obtained by solar panels (Extremely expensive). Solar Energy can be classified by passive solar and active solar. Solar panels convert radiant energy to electrical energy.

3 How Solar Panels Work The photovoltaic cells convert light energy into electrical energy. Photons penetrate the photovoltaic cells. The photons loosen the electrons in the top silicon layer. The electrons in the bottom layer flow to the top layer and run through metal contacts as electrical energy.

4 Pros and Cons Pros Solar energy is inexhaustible.
Provides an alternative to fossil fuel which are running out. You can place solar panels on residential home. Cons Solar energy is extremely expensive to obtain due to the solar panels. Not quite as powerful as fossil fuels or nuclear energy.

5 How Solar Energy Can Be Used
Solar energy can be used for home energy. Solar panels can be installed on the roofs of homes to provide an alternate energy. Specific uses for solar energy includes heating water, lighting, cooking, disinfection, and making water potable.
