Hardship and Suffering During the Depression People did what they had to to survive It leaves people more cautious about saving, borrowing

In the cities People lost jobs, were evicted from homes Lived in streets –Slept in sewer pipes, wrapped in Newspaper to cut cold winds –Built shacks of scrap metal, etc –Shantytowns (groups of shacks)

Soup kitchens & Bread Lines Provided by charities- became common Free or low cost food Life was harder for minorities Racism increased as jobs became scarce

Depression in Rural areas Families grew vegetables in gardens Many farmers lost farms Dust Bowl: –Years of drought and over plowed top soil –Soil blew hundreds of miles –Many farmers, sharecroppers left land and headed west –Looking for work Oakies

Effect on families Families found entertainment at home –Board games –Listening to the radio Some families split apart under the strain 300,000+ became hoboes –Homeless, traveling in RR boxcars

Relief & women Few cities had any; those that did had little. Women canned food; sewed clothes Working women were resented as taking jobs from men School teachers mostly hired if single Few women seen living on the streets; assumed they suffered less. –Reality: starved in attics, ashamed to reveal hardship.

Children Malnutrition & rickets were common Many schools were closed, others shortened the year (cost of keeping open too high) Thousands of children worked in sweatshops Thousands rode the rails for adventure. (Hoover tourists) over 50,000 killed or injured by accident, criminals or Bulls (patrolmen)

The effect Suicide rates rose 30% Adults gave up going to the doctor/dentist Youth gave up hopes of college Many put off getting married, or having children Kindness to strangers: –Many gave food, clothing and shelter to needy Most feared poverty for the rest of their lives
