The Respiratory System
A breath of life The Respiratory System Prof. Luigi García Saavedra
2
The human respiratory system picks up oxygen from the air we inhale and releases carbon dioxide into the air we exhale
3
Structures
4
Nose Hair lining: filtering
Inner nasal cavity and Sinuses : warming, production of mucus
5
Pharynx (throat) Larynx Trachea (windpipe) Pasageway for air and food
Between pharynx and trachea Vocal cords Trachea (windpipe) Epiglotis closes when we swallow food or liquids
6
Bronchi – Bronchioles Alveoli Each bronchus leads to one lung
Bronchi divide into smaller passageways (bronchioles) Surrounded by smooth muscle They keep dividing until reaching tiny sacs called Alveoli Place where the gas exchange takes place
7
Alveoli Lungs Each one is surrounded by capillaries
Alveolar sac: group of alveoli Alveolar sacs are group together in lobules of greater size each time Lobules are grouped in segments and segments in lobes Lungs Right lung: 3 lobes Left lung: 2 lobes

Gas Exchange and Transport
11
Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged across the walls of alveoli and capillaries.
Chemical properties of blood and red blood cells allow for efficient transport of gases througout the body.

Breathing
15
Movements of the diaphragm and rib cage change air pressure in the chest cavity during inhalation and exhalation.
