You’ll need: Your journal, a pen or pencil (as always!), and a textbook (the blue ones) TODAY’S GOAL: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THREE STRATEGIES FOR DETERMINING THE MEANING OF UNFAMILIAR WORDS.

First, our new attendance system starts today! As you enter class, pull your card and put it in the matching box Be careful not to pull out the cards behind yours! Cards not pulled are collected as soon as the bell rings. This is how we know you are tardy or absent! Pulling someone else’s card, or otherwise “messing with” the system, is a serious offense and is grounds for an immediate detention. Let’s try it! Everyone out into the hall (quietly) Then come in again and pull your cards

“THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO” A story of revenge ! Poe and his rival, Thomas Dunn English, often mocked each other in their stories. “The Cask of Amontillado” is a response to one of English’s most direct attacks of Poe as a drunkard, a liar, and an abusive lover. As we read, listen for Poe trying to work out his own feelings about revenge through his writing. What hints are there that he might be wavering in his vengeful spite? “A man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green.” – Francis Bacon
