4. George Washington The First President of the United States of America Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He led a group of soldiers against a far superior army to victory resulting in independence.

5. Thomas Jefferson Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence The Louisiana Purchase was one of the largest land deals in history. In 1803, the United States paid approximately $15 million dollars for over 800,000 square miles of land. This land deal was arguably the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency

Granted 6,000 men under General Jean- Baptiste de Rochambeau, he returned to America in May 1781. Sent to Virginia by Washington, he conducted operations against the traitor Benedict Arnold.

He was a major negotiator of the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and chiefly responsible for obtaining the loans from the Amsterdam money market necessary for the conduct of the Revolution.
