2 Extreme Catholic Extreme Protestant 1500 A.D 1600 A.D Henry VIII is given the title ‘Defender of the Faith’ by the Pope for writing a book criticising Protestants. For over a thousand years England has been a Catholic country. Henry VIII is unable to get a divorce so he makes himself head of the Church Edward VI and his advisers make massive changes to the Church. Mary I restores the Pope as head of the church and has Protestants burnt at the stake. The new queen, Elizabeth is a Protestant but she knows not everyone agrees with her. Elizabeth introduces changes that ensure the church has Catholic elements to it but is mainly Protestant. The Pope excommunicates Elizabeth. Catholics are meant to kill the Queen so Catholic priests can now be killed. Protestant extremists known as Puritans are executed by Elizabeth.
