They replace the object when object = subject Rajan saw himself in the mirror. The silvas bought themselves a new car. Jenny is always speaking to herself. Rajan saw Rajan in the mirror. The Silvas bought the Silvas a new car. Jenny is always speaking to Jenny.

Emphatic: reforce the subject or the object. Clarisse herself wrote that letter. Position in the sentence varies Clarisse wrote that letter herself. Emphasizing the subject
