1 Look at the pictures and come up with what we will be studying for the first part of the lesson. 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non- renewable fuels?

2 Gossip You each have some information about a type of fuel, its advantages and disadvantages. You now have to ‘gossip’ on your table telling each other about your fuel BUT you cant show each other your information. At the end your table must be completed with all of the notes.

3 Type of fuel Where does it come from?AdvantagesDisadvantages Coal : non- renewable fossil fuel From fossilised plants. Found in the ground. It has to be burnt to produce energy. Relatively cheap to mine. Supplies could last another 250 years When burnt gives off greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide Oil: non- renewable fossil fuel From fossilised animals. Lakes of oil found under land or sea. It is burnt to produce energy. Relatively cheap to mine. Supplies should last another 50 years. When burnt gives off greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide Natural gas: non- renewable fossil fuel Methane gases are trapped between seams of rock and under the Earth’s surface. Pipes are put down through the ground and gas is pumped to surface. Relatively cheap to mine. Cleaner fuel than oil or coal. Supplies should last another 70 years When burnt gives off greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide Nuclear: non- renewable Produce from uranium which is obtained from mining. Energy produced when atoms split or joined together in nuclear reactors. Small amount of uranium gives off a lot of energy. Raw materials last a long time. Doesn’t give off greenhouse gasses. Nuclear reactors are expensive to build and run. Nuclear waste is radioactive and has to be stored for thousands of years. Can be very dangerous if it leaks. Biomass: non- renewable or renewable if the plants are re- grown Decaying plant or animal matter. Example: oil seed rape which is fields of yellow flowers. After being treated with chemicals it can be used to fuel diesel engines. Cheap and readily available. If plants re-grown it’s renewable. When burnt gives off greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide. If large areas of land are taken to produce energy crops, there may be food shortages. Wood: non- renewable or renewable if trees are re- grown Obtained from cutting down trees. The trees are burnt to provide energy. Cheap and readily available. If trees are re-grown it is renewable. When burnt gives off greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide.

23 WOKING BOROUGH COUNCIL CASE STUDY When did they set it up What did they do with electricity cables? What is CHP? How many buildings does it power? How has it been extended? How many other houses will benefit? How else is it trying to be sustainable? How are its street lights powered?

24 Choose a HIC you have studied. Explain how it disposes of different types of waste. (6 marks) You are the examiner- what do you expect to be included to get 6 marks? Which case study are you going to choose? Germany/Barnet/Camden?
