2 Parts of speech A word that takes the place of a noun Pronoun

3 Parts of speech A word that modifies a noun or pronoun, that is, it makes the noun or pronoun more specific Adjective Noun- boy Adjective Tall boy

4 Parts of speech A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb Adverb (tells when, where, how, how often, to what extent) He drove slowly He drove very slowly.

5 Parts of speech A word that shows a relationship between a nouns or pronoun and another word in a sentence e.g. The book is on the table. On tells where the book is in relationship to the table. Preposition

6 Other terms: Appositive A noun or pronoun that renames a preceding noun or pronoun My favorite author, Charles Dickens

7 Prepositional Phrase Prepositional Phrase Phrase that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun On the bed Of gingerbread and icing Before noon BUT NOT Before I go to bed (“I go” = subject and verb)
