BRONZE Training Environmental care and respect Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award

Protect plants and Animals Protect New Zealand’s forests and birds, they are unique and often rare…. What about me? We’ll leave you to the zookeepers

Camp Carefully Leave no trace of your visit

Environment - Rubbish Unattractive, harmful to wildlife and can increase vermin and disease Remove excess packaging before you go tramping Keep all rubbish together in a plastic bag Dispose of it once you get home “Pack it in, Pack it out”

Bury Toilet Waste Long drop best, or a hole at least 50m away from water, paths, camps & huts. You may consider setting up a common toilet area for the camp Wash hands afterwards Periods – remove all tampons and pads (in a plastic bag) No 2: try to plan your day around your body rhythms if possible

Keep Waterways clean Clean and wash well away from water sources because soaps and detergents are harmful to water life. Even biodegradable soaps can be damaging. Dishes - minimum detergent and water - well away from streams Keep your campsite clean Water purification - boil, add tablets, use a filter or UV light

Boiling water Easy and no extra equipment is needed Boil at night, cool overnight for the next day Can use for melting snow for drinking BUT Can use valuable fuel, takes time, labour intensive Water can be hard to store You can get burnt in the process

Purification tablets Small and light to carry Not labour intensive BUT Read instructions carefully Can cause allergies May not taste pleasant Cheap tablets don’t have neutralising agents Cost $10-40 (40c - $1 per litre)

Water filters Instant clean water Easy to use No taste BUT can break Size and weight Can be labour intensive Can be slow Cost of filter catridges

UV light Water can be drunk straight away after treatment Easy to use Turns itself off Small and lightweight BUT Can break Require batteries Can be labour intensive Can be slow

Personal Hygeine Washing - wet wipes, environmental soap, anti-bacterial gel Brushing teeth - spit away from camp and bury or rub into the ground Hands - always wash after toilet AND before handling / eating food Feet - air, clean and dry regularly to prevent blistering and infections (take a clean pair just for sleeping in)

Cleaning up Dishes - minimum detergent and water - well away from streams Clean dishes as soon as possible – much easier Keep your campsite clean Leave huts cleaner than you found them (remember dust creeps in between users)

Tracks Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging plants Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
