SDZ Construction: Aviation Rocketry Inter-service Resident Range Safety Course (Intermediate)
2
August 2003 The 2.75 FFAR (Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket) has an air-to-ground role and is fired from fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Its fuzing and warhead performance characteristics make it suitable for low-speed aircraft.

August 2003 Constructing the SDZ Construct an SDZ for the 2.75 FFAR rocket with a MK66 motor fired into steel from an aircraft with a pitch -5° and launcher quadrant elevation of 95 mils. Dimensions of the SDZ parameters for this weapon system are given in Chapter 13, pages 13-5 and 13-6.
8
August 2003 Constructing the SDZ For aerial rockets, the launch angle in degrees, equals launcher QE in mils divided by 17.7 plus the aircraft pitch in degrees. For articulating launchers, use the maximum articulated QE possible plus the aircraft pitch in degrees.
9
August 2003 Launch Angle is computed as follows: Launch angle (in degrees) = + Aircraft Pitch (in degrees) 17.7 Launcher QE (in mils) Launcher QE = 95 mils 17.7 = 5.36° (ˆ6°) 6° - 5° = 1° (ˆ2°) Launch angle = 2°
10
August 2003 Establish the right and left lateral limits. Plot the target. Locate the Cease- Fire Disarm Line. Locate the Start- Fire Safe-Arm Line. Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m
11
August 2003 From Table 13-1, find Distance X as measured from the cease-fire disarm line. Distance X = 4500m Annotate Distance X on the legend. At the start-fire line, measure 5° with a protractor from the left and right lateral limits to establish the Dispersion Area. 5° Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
12
August 2003 Draw tic marks as shown. To establish the Dispersion Area, draw a straight line from the firing position through each tic mark out through Distance X. This completes the Dispersion Area. 5° Dispersion Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
13
August 2003 At the start-fire line, measure 10° with a protractor from the left and right limits of the firing line to establish the Ricochet Area. Draw tic marks as shown. To establish the Ricochet Area, draw a straight line from the firing position through each tic mark out through Distance X. 10° 1000m Dispersion Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
14
August 2003 This completes the Ricochet Area. At the left limit of the start-fire line, scribe an arc between the left limit of the Ricochet Area and the left lateral limit. Use Distance X as the radius. Do the same on the right side. 10° Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
15
August 2003 At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of the start-fire line. Erase any unnecessary lines. Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
16
August 2003 The measurement for Area A = 300m. Lightly draw lines perpendicular to the limits of the Ricochet Area. Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of the start-fire line. Erase any unnecessary lines. Distance X
17
August 2003 Draw tic marks at the measurement for Area A. Draw straight lines parallel to the limits of the Ricochet Area through the tic marks just drawn. Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
18
August 2003 At the firing position, measure 25° with a protractor from the left and right limits of the Ricochet Area to establish the Area A. Draw tic marks. 25° Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
19
August 2003 From the start-fire, draw straight lines through the tic marks just drawn. The measurement for Area B = 300m Lightly draw lines that extend the firing lines from Distance X by the measurement for Area B. 25° Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
20
August 2003 From the right and left limits of the firing line, scribe an arc from the right and left limits of Area A using the measurement for Area B as the radius. At the measure- ment for Area B, connect the right and left limits of the firing lines with a straight line. 25° Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
21

August 2003 Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Area A Area B Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m To complete this portion of the SDZ, erase all unnecessary lines. This completes Areas A and B. Annotate Areas A and B on the legend. Distance X
23
August 2003 This SDZ has a Maneuver- Holding Area which will now be shown in detail. To complete this portion of the SDZ, erase all unnecessary lines. Dispersion Area Ricochet Area Maneuver- Holding Area 60° This completes Areas A and B. Annotate Areas A and B on the legend. Area A Area B Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Distance X
24
August 2003 In this illustration, the Maneuver- Holding Area extends 1km behind the start- fire line. This distance is variable. Extend the firing lines back the distance of the Maneuver-Holding area. At the firing lines, measure back 60°. 60° 1km
25
August 2003 1km Draw tic marks. Draw straight lines through the tic marks. 60°
26
August 2003 From the firing line, draw arcs out to the limits of the Maneuver- Holding Area. This completes the Maneuver- Holding Area. 60° Erase any unnecessary lines. 1km Close the area as shown.
