1
SOME THINGS IN HELL THAT OUGHT TO BE IN THE CHURCH
2
The Narrative of Lazarus & the Rich Man Luke 16:19–31 — The rich man received “thy good things” His life was characterized by life’s bounty and little or no concern for others less fortunate. Lazarus received “evil things” His life was characterized by suffering and dependence.
3
Observations on the Narrative— We learn a child of God can be lost (v. 25). We learn there is conscious existence after death (v. 23). Comfort and bliss for the righteous. Torment and anguish for the wicked. We learn that eternity is determined in time (v. 22). These things are fixed. Remorse and regret will not change it.
4
Steadfast Conviction Hell Is Real & Inevitable for the Wicked Must Be in the Church— The Rich Man & Abraham knew Hell was real. “I am tormented in this flame!” (v. 24) “Thou art tormented” (v. 25). The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). If saints believed in Hell sin would not be in the church (Galatians 5:19–21; I Corinthians 6:9–10). Now is the time to be convinced (Matthew 7:19, 23).
5
Genuine Concern for the Lost Ought to Be Had by the Church— The Rich Man was concerned about his family (v. 28). Had not developed respect for the Word (v. 31). “Going to synagogue” was not enough (Acts 15:21). The whole church needs to be concerned for the lost. The heart’s desire (Romans 9:3; 10:1–3). Focus on your family (I Peter 3:20). No lost person wants family to join them in Hell!
6
Fervent Prayer for the Needs of Souls Ought to Be Made by the Church— The Rich Man prayed fervently and sincerely for the needs of his soul (v. 24). Think of the opportunities to pray he missed (v. 19). Note for whom he could have prayed (v. 21, 28). The church has the privilege to pray (I Timothy 2:1–4). Pray more (I Thessalonians 5:17; I Timothy 5:5). Pray earnestly & confidently (Matthew 6:7–8; 7:11).
7
Recognition of the Power & Authority of the Word Should Be in the Church— The Rich Man learned too late God has a judgment standard (v. 29; cf. Deuteronomy 15:11). Christ has given us a judgment standard (John 12:48). His Word has all authority (Hebrews 1:1-4). His Word has power to save (Romans 1:16). His Word is immutable (Galatians 1:6–9). His Word will judge at the Last Day (Romans 2:16).
