Segments Three segments The space segment contains the satelllites.
The nominal GPS constellation contains 24 satellites. However, the current constellation contains 5 Block II, 18 Block IIA and 6 Block IIR satellites - I.e. 29 satellites. Six orbital planes, equally spaced 60 degrees apart and inclined at about 55 degrees with respect to the equatorial plane. Nominally 4 satellites in each plane. Currently 4 or 5 orbital planes. The orbit altitude is such that the nominal orbital period of each satellite is 11 hrs and 58 mins, I.e. the satellites repeat the same track and configuration over any point on the Earth’s surface 4 minutes earlier each day. Satellites are identified by various systems. Most popular are: SVN - Space Vehicle Number PRN - Pseudo Random Noise Block II/IIA - 4 onboard atomic clocks - 2 Caesium, 2 Rubidium Block IIR - Rubidium clocks only
