Ideas of Kingship Kings…are vicars of God, placed over the people to maintain them in justice and truth in temporal matters, in the same way as the emperor in his empire…The king is put upon the earth in place of God to render justice and to give each one his right; wherefore he is called the heart and soul of his people.
