Establishing an Electric Distribution GIS Using ArcFM Melissa A. Williams, P.E. Senior Project Engineer Stantec Consulting September 29 - 30, 2011 | Hyatt Regency Hotel | Columbus, Ohio
2
Establishing an Electric Distribution GIS Using ArcFM City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Telvent Multispeak Data Model, ArcFM Software Data Conversion Strategy Data Analysis/QC
3
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets –AutoCAD drawings –Hand drawn manhole/vault sketches –Access database –GPS points
4
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets: AutoCAD Single Line Drawings (underground)
5
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets: AutoCAD Single Line Drawings (overhead)
6
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets: AutoCAD Detail Drawings (manholes/vaults)
7
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets: AutoCAD Detail Drawings (padmount transformers)
8
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Existing Datasets: Hand drawn manhole/vault sketches
9
City of Columbus Electric Distribution Digital Conversion Project Goals –Seamless data showing primary distribution lines –Locations/attributes –Connectivity –Allow for future development / analysis
10
Telvent Multispeak Data Model, ArcFM Software Data Model created/maintained by Telvent GIS (formerly Telvent Miner & Miner) –M&M provided electrical engineering services since 1946 –Automated Mapping/Facilities Management/GIS since 1986 –Business partner with ESRI Telvent ArcFM Enterprise GIS is an extension for ArcGIS
11
Telvent Multispeak Data Model, ArcFM Software
12
Customization of data model: –Used Microsoft Visio to make changes to data model –Added / Changed / Deleted attributes to match existing Access database fields –Added / Edited domains, subtypes
13
Telvent Multispeak Data Model, ArcFM Software Advantages of using ArcFM software (vs data model alone) –Ability to perform more complex analyses and better QC (e.g. electric traces) –Additional functionality through other Telvent solutions Conduit Manager Responder

16
Data Conversion Strategy No heads-up digitizing with georeferenced images Start with GPS’ed and ortho-verfied point features –GPS points for poles, manholes/vaults –Ortho-verified padmount transformers
17
Data Conversion Strategy Create manhole diagrams for Conduit Manager
18
Data Conversion Strategy Digitize conduits between manholes/vaults –One conduit per duct bank –Split conduit if different configuration on each end –Snap to manhole/vault points
19
Data Conversion Strategy Digitize underground conductors from manhole to manhole –Break, but not snap at manholes
20
Data Conversion Strategy Add switches and transformers within manholes/vaults –Connect to match detail drawings –Use ArcFM favorites for composite features
21
Data Conversion Strategy Associate conductors to ducts in manholes to complete Conduit Manager diagrams
22
Data Conversion Strategy Associate conductors to ducts in manholes –Can split by phase to different ducts
23
Data Conversion Strategy Digitize overhead conductors, transformers –Draw close to, but don’t snap to poles –Don’t need to break at poles
24
Data Conversion Strategy Add additional devices on poles –Capacitors –Switches (section points, tie points, auto-transfer) –Risers (potheads), circuit feeders –Regulators –Reclosers –Fault Indicators
25
Data Analysis/QC ArcFM Electric Traces –FeederID attribute populated for energized conductors/devices –Can trace by phase –Can open/close switches to see new circuit path
26
Data Analysis/QC ArcFM Electric Traces
27
Data Analysis/QC ArcFM Feeder Manager Locator Tool –Will detect loops, devices energized by more than one circuit, de-energized devices
