What is Health Vault? Health Vault is a on-line personal health record system Health information stored in one central location Provides easy access to patient information such as current medications, past medical history (PMA) and allergies

What is HealthVault? Users can upload patient data from compatible devices to a Health Vault record Patient information can be viewed from a portable device Healthcare issues can be viewed by physicians/nurses from a computer to track progress (Microsoft, 2009)

Heart 360 A computer is used to upload data, such as blood pressure readings to HealthVault After plugging in the monitor, the blood pressure readings are automatically sent to a HealthVault record Then blood pressure can be tracked in one location

Usability of Software HealthVault Connection Center simply needs to be uploaded to a computer Information is automatically uploaded to a HealthVault account After the initial set-up, HealthVault is simple to use (Microsoft, 2009)

Health Vault Information System An Administrative System Used by hospitals, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and health insurance providers Allows personal health information to be viewed anywhere on-line Configuration – access to a computer with internet compatibilities Data Standard – Health Level Seven (HL7) (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2009)

Recommendation I would recommend this system to others utilizing this trend Easy to use/access Fast and convenient way to keep all personal medical records at your fingertips Safe and confidential

Advantages Free account to store health information Healthcare providers can store health information in one location Choices regarding who has access to personal health information is controlled by account owner. Leads to more informed/responsible healthcare decisions Has specialized search engine designed to give relevant health information

Disadvantages Privacy issues = Data hacking and stolen identity issues Health information could be lost or damaged Loss of the human touch

Legal/Ethical Issues Privacy issues Hackers can gain access to personal health information Not a covered entity or business associate as defined HIPAA Search engine used to obtain health information should NOT be used in place of a physician

Nursing Informatics Basic knowledge of computers Knowledge of software/hardware related to HealthVault Knowledge of how to upload data from various sources

Summary HealthVault is an encrypted on-line record used to store personal health information. Used to assist in record keeping and for obtaining relevant health information
