Transition Areas Definition: The area that begins at the frost line below grade and rises at least 24” above grade. 1.Frost line is different across the US 2.Below grade meaning buried pipe 3.Above grade meaning rising into the atmosphere
14
Transition Areas Below Grade Forces impact coating: Soil stress or frost heave pull on the pipe and coating creating a unique environment during the winter months Above Grade Forces impact coating: UV, harsh backfill, weed whackers, weather, and atmospheric temperatures continually wear on pipe coating Product temperature can effect coating too.

Bridge & Creek Crossings Definition: An Atmospheric Application that has a Transition Area on both sides New construction or Rehab with damaged coating to dispose External forces that damage coating: UV, Atmospheric temp, product temp, weather, be it a rising creek with debris flowing down river or overflow from snow plow trucks Human factor: kids walking across, or being used to fish from Access problems Preparation problems Sweating surface limits coating choices
18
Bridge and Creek Crossings Typical Limitations: Difficult access, removal and disposal of old coating, restrictive surface preparation, sweating pipe, and ambient temperature. Limited Coating Choices: Coating choice is determined by environmental factors

Vault Applications 1.Unique environment where a regulator station or other piping could be in an atmospheric condition and at times an underwater condition. 2.Typical Environment: Limited and restrictive access to area, wet surfaces, flanges that need to be inspected 3.Limited Surface Prep: Hand tools, no power, no sandblast
