3 The Dative Case- Indirect Objects We know that the subject of a sentence is the nominative case and the direct object is the accusative case. If we have an indirect object, it will be in the dative case. What is an indirect object?

4 Indirect Object An indirect object is the person (almost always) who receives the action of the verb. I am giving my mom flowers for Mother’s Day. To whom are you giving the flowers?

6 Notes on the Dative The endings on the definite articles all change in the dative. We need to be able to identify the parts of speech. Let’s identify the parts of the following sentence: Ich schenke meiner Mutter einen Blumenstrauss zum Muttertag.

16 Indirect Object word order Ich schenke meiner Mutter einen Blumenstrauss zum Muttertag. There are three rule to follow when you write sentences with indirect objects.

17 Word Order Rule Number 1 When both the direct and indirect objects are nouns, the indirect object comes first. Ich schenke meiner Mutter einen Blumenstrauss zum Muttertag

18 Word Order Rule Number 2 When one is a pronoun and one is a noun, the pronoun comes first Ich schenke ihr einen Blumenstrauss zum Muttertag. Ich schenke ihn meiner Mutter zum Muttertag.

19 Word Order Rule Number 3 When both the direct and indirect object are pronouns, the direct object comes first and the indirect object comes second Ich schenke ihn ihr zum Muttertag.

20 Word Order The rest of the sentence stays the same, Subject, verb, time, manner, place……. Jedes Jahr schenke ich warscheinlich meiner Mutter einen Blumenstrauss von dem Blumenladen.
