CHOIR TERMS VOCABULARY Window- To move so you can see the director in between two heads Stagger Breathe- To breathe when your neighbor doesn’t. Diction- Being able to understand what you are singing. D’s, T’s, N’s, etc. Pick-up – The notes leading into a measure. (usually one or two eighth notes).

Choir Terms Continued Stress- Put emphasis on that syllable Example: MUS ‘ic. Which syllable has more stress? Unison- Everyone sings the same part together. Tutti – Everyone sings together (not necessarily the same part). Enharmonic Note – Same note, although written differently ex. F#/Gb

Descant- A Harmony higher than the melody Sight Read – Look at music for the first time Round – everyone sings the same thing starting AND ending at the different times. Canon – everyone sings the same thing starting at different times, but ending at the same time. Voice Crossing – When the lower voices sing higher than the high voices and the high voices sing lower than the low voices.
