What are Steroids? Any of numerous naturally occurring or synthetic fat-soluble organic compounds Have a basis of 17 carbon atoms Include the sterols and bile acids Adrenal and sex hormones Certain natural drugs such as digitalis compounds Precursors of certain vitamins

Types of Steroids Anabolic: group of synthetic hormones that are derivatives of testosterone Used medically (to promote tissue growth) Abused by athletes to increase the size/strength of muscles and improve endurance

Types of Steroids Androgenic: A hormone that has masculinizing effects Stimulation of the male reproductive organs Development of male secondary sex characteristics
