Emphasis on leaders within organisations promoting environmental management and shift towards improving environmental performance rather than management systems; Environmental Better Regulation Bill – DOE issued response to consultation in August 2013; Better Regulation Feedback and Review of NI Business Red Tape (Pilot reviews with a focus on construction, agri-food and three specific areas of hospitality).

Waste and the Duty of Care Restrictions on the landfilling of food waste –Regulations regarding separately collected food waste and banning of food waste to landfill from April 2015; Proposal to increase EU recycling targets by 2030; Duty of Care Code of Practice updated July 2014; Waste Producer and the Duty of Care – Practical considerations:- Handle and store waste safely and securely – e.g., containers, prevent leakage, vandalism Check is the waste carrier/manager authorised and reputable – NIEA public register? Waste Transfer Note (WTN) – accurate and adequate description of waste, bear signatories etc.; Keep WTNs for a minimum of 2 years (or 3 years if Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes); Should know destination of waste; landfill, transfer station, export; Your obligations do not cease at the point the waste leaves your premises; not until there is a new “producer”, e.g., transfer facility that changes the nature of the waste; NB disposing of waste and Data Protection Act – personal data
